ABOUT THE ROCKIN’ JP
This 102 acre Ranch and Arena is owned and operated by Joe and Patty Scelso who are long time avid Team Penners, and overall horse enthusiasts Joe started his career with horses in 1981 while he was employed by the San Diego Police Department and was selected to develop and implement a Horse Patrol Unit.
His love of horses and desire to become more involved with, and learn more about them, had him seeking information and knowledge from every conceivable source, such as other Mounted Enforcement Units from around the world, Professional Farriers, Veterinarians, Horse Trainers from all disciplines, Horse Owners, and reading volumes of information from a wide variety of books and periodical publications, which he still does today In March of 1982 the Police Department started it’s Mounted Enforcement Unit after Joe had designed a comprehensive training program, personnel selection criteria, uniform design, horse criteria, selection and training process, and tactical and patrol procedures Joe then managed this unit for a period of 9 years during which time the program had expanded, and other law enforcement agencies from around the country were sending their officers to this 8-week Academy for training In 1984 Joe saw Team Penning for the first time, and it was not long after that he became involved in the sport.
Realizing he needed special training for this Joe sought and used the services of numerous trainers, and attended many Clinics Through the years Joe has won several local and regional pennings, and in 2000 won Reserve Champion at a National Penning in Albuquerque, NM riding against 237 teams Joes love of the sport, and his organizational and teaching skills, soon had him doing Team Penning clinics for beginning and experienced team penners His knowledge of training horses and people has him now providing those services at their ranch in Hereford, AZ, his specialty being practical riding skills and how to work cattle/team penning, and training horses for working cattle.
Patty’s love of horses began at an early age and has never waned She baby sat to earn money to buy a horse and continue to support it, as well as purchase equipment and other necessary items and services It was about 1986 when Patty saw her first Team Penning and it’s been a steady addiction ever since Fortunately she and Joe share the same passion and they can be seen at numerous pennings around the country, and at home in their own arena, competing with and against each other.
Joe and Patty’s passion for the sport saw both of them planning for their future, after retirement, with a small cattle ranch as well as an arena to produce their own Team Pennings and other Equestrian events This, along with their travels for competitions has them working harder now then when they had normal jobs, but this is what they have chosen for their lives and they love it When Joe tries to call in sick, Patty can be seen rolling on the floor in hysterical laughter With their years of production experience, and knowledge of the sport, Both Joe and Patty are Certified By United States Team Penning Association as Judges and Announcers, allowing them to officiate any place in the world a USTPA Sanctioned Penning is held.
They want to share all of their experience and training, along with their facility with as many people as possible, so the door is always open (but remember to close the gate behind you) when you come to visit!
